Updating Microsoft Windows

The Knowledge Base article at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914387 describes approaches for updating Microsoft Windows on a single computer and multiple, networked computers.

Updating a Single Microsoft Windows Computer: TZEdit

For customers who need to implement a very small number of updates or only a single computer, the Microsoft TZEdit utility is a good choice.

Microsoft describes how to use TZEdit to update the operating system to use the correct definition of Daylight Saving Time. Those instructions are not duplicated in this white paper.

Although the Knowledge Base article at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914387 does not specifically state it, Argent has confirmed that the TZEdit does run successfully and produces the correct results on Windows NT 4 Server SP6 platforms.

Updating Multiple Networked Computers

For customers that need to update Microsoft Windows on multiple networked computers, the Knowledge Base article at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914387 describes how to create a registry file update and a shell script that can be deployed as part of a domain-level Group Policy Object.

Special Considerations for non-US English Systems

Customers who need to update Microsoft Windows to support the new definition of Daylight Saving Time on computers configured to use language and cultural support other than United States English must give special consideration to the instructions in Knowledge Base article KB914387.

The instructions in the Knowledge Base article are focused on US English systems. Microsoft provides a set of guidelines on how to adapt to instructions to use localized support.

Customers must prepare and test registry file updates and shell scripts that are needed on non US English systems.

Special Considerations for Windows 2000 Systems

Customers who need to update Microsoft Windows on systems running Windows 2000 will note that no specific mention of Windows 2000 platforms is made in Knowledge Base article KB914387.

Argent has conducted investigation and testing on Windows 2000 Server and we have confirmed that the instructions in the Knowledge Base article work correctly on that platform.

Enterprise managers who need to update Microsoft Windows can use the instructions in Knowledge Base article KB914387 to update systems running:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Edition
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server

Argent provides FREE support and consulting for customers in preparation of the Daylight Saving Time change.

Special Considerations for Windows NT 4 SP6 Server Systems

Customers who need to update Microsoft Windows on systems running Windows NT 4 SP6 Server will note that no specific mention of Windows NT 4 platforms is made in Knowledge Base article KB914387.

Argent has conducted investigation and testing on Windows NT 4 SP6 Server and we have confirmed that the instructions in the Knowledge Base article DO NOT work correctly on that platform without a critically important change.

The instructions in Knowledge Base article KB914387 call for customers to create a file in Notepad. The resulting file is displayed this way:

The first line of the file resulting from the instructions reads:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

When adapting the instructions to be used with Windows NT 4 SP6 Server systems, the first line of the file resulting from the instructions must be change to read:

REGEDIT4

This necessarily implies that Windows NT 4 SP6 systems should be managed as a separate group or updated manually using the instructions for a single computer.

Re-Boot Considerations

As part of the planning for any change to Microsoft Windows, enterprise managers are always concerned with whether or not a re-boot is required.

Windows 2003 Server - Re-Boot Not Required

Argent's research and testing has confirmed that when the updates needed to support the new definition of Daylight Saving Time are installed, a re-boot is not needed.

Windows XP - Re-Boot Not Required

Argent's research and testing has confirmed that when the updates needed to support the new definition of Daylight Saving Time are installed, a re-boot is not needed.

Windows NT 4 SP6 - Re-Boot Required

When the updates needed to support the new definition of Daylight Saving Time are installed on a Windows NT 4 SP6 Server system, a re-boot is required. In one case during Argent’s testing, a particular machine in our development lab required two re-boots to activate the changes.
