A basic capability of any modern computer system is timekeeping and date/time calculations. Computers running Microsoft Windows operating systems are no different: Windows, not application programs, provides the basic timekeeping functions including Daylight Saving Time.
Computer systems running Microsoft Windows operating systems should be analyzed to determine if software updates to the operating system are needed.
Although it is conceivable that a computer may have no meaningful business applications installed, without updating Windows, the computer will display the incorrect date during Daylight Saving Time.
Microsoft clearly states that many important productivity applications such as Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft Outlook are impacted by the Daylight Saving Time change.
If operating system updates needed to support the change to the new Daylight Savings Time are not applied, important data such as meeting times, dates and times of e-mails sent and received, and other routine data could be impacted.
The impact of incorrect dates and times on computers running Microsoft Windows could become annoying and disruptive.
Enterprise managers need to evaluate the potential impact on the business of incorrect dates and times.
Some analysts and computer industry writers have compared the change to the new definition of Daylight Saving Time to the "Year 2000" (Y2K) crisis of years past.
The comparisons are not always valid, since the impact of Y2K affected scores of millions of computers worldwide and scores of thousands of commercially available and privately developed software applications.
One comparison with Y2K is clearly valid: Enterprise managers must assess the impact of the Daylight Saving Time change on their business computing systems, plan carefully to adjust to the change, and execute their plans flawlessly to avoid disruptions and potential negative business impacts.
Customers running Argent Job Scheduler need to give special consideration to the new definition of Daylight Saving Time.
The Argent Job Scheduler Scheduling Engine relies on Microsoft Windows operating system support for Daylight Saving Time.
Customer systems where Argent Job Scheduler Scheduling Engine is installed and running must update their Microsoft Windows operating system software for accurate date/time calculations during Daylight Saving Time.
Customers do not need to upgrade the Argent Job Scheduler product, only the Microsoft Windows operating system is affected.
NO CHANGES ARE NEEDED TO ANY ARGENT PRODUCT.
ALL ARGENT PRODUCTS HANDLE THE TIME CORRECTLY - BASED ON THE OPERATING SYSTEM'S SETTINGS. BUT IF THE MICROSOFT OPERATING SYSTEM'S VALUES ARE WRONG, THE ARGENT PRODUCT WILL BE ADVERSELY AFFECTED.
WHILE THIS IS NOT AN ARGENT ISSUE, ARGENT BELIEVES IT TO BE ARGENT'S RESPONSIBILITY TO ENSURE CUSTOMERS' AND OTHERS' PRODUCTION SERVERS ALL RUN CORRECTLY, REGARDLESS OF WHO CAUSES THE PROBLEM.
Some customers do not distinguish between Argent Job Scheduler Scheduling Engine and Argent Queue Engine in their minds. While understandable, it is important to keep the two distinct when planning for the new definition of Daylight Saving Time.
Argent Job Scheduler Scheduling Engine servers provide the core scheduling, while the Argent Queue Engine servers execute the actual batch jobs, scheduled from the Argent Job Scheduler. While some customers have the Argent Job Scheduler and the Argent Queue Engine, co-resident on the same machine. In some cases, production Argent customers will run one Argent Job Scheduler to submit jobs to run on over 900 remote Argent Queue Engine servers, such is the scalability of the Argent scheduling products.
Argent Queue Engine software will continue to run correctly without the Microsoft Windows operating system Daylight Saving Time updates installed.
Customer application jobs that run on Argent Queue Engine platforms need to be analyzed for any possible impact of the new definition of Daylight Saving Time. Contact your enterprise’s software application developers or your enterprise software vendors to arrange for any application software updates needed from them.
Argent has prepared a free test utility program to help customers and others assess whether the Microsoft servers are ready to support the new definition of Daylight Saving Time. This utility program is named Argent_Check.
This utility is provided free of charge to the worldwide IT community to enable anyone to quickly and easily test the correctness or otherwise of their production servers.
Further Argent has provided -- again at no cost -- a web site, called DST.Argent.com -- containing the information contained in this white paper, as well as the free Argent_Check test utility.
Argent Job Scheduler customers should run the Argent_Check to see if their production servers need to have the Microsoft Windows operating system updates installed.
After installing the Microsoft Windows operating system updates needed to support the new definition of Daylight Saving Time, Argent_Check can be used to verify that date and time calculations performed during Daylight Saving Time will be accurate.
